ANCIENT PERUVIAN RUINS CARAL TOUR DESCRIPTION:

The archaeological site of Caral is one of at least 25 large ceremonial and residential sites in the area that is located in the valley of river Supe, around 180 km to the north of Peruvian Capital Lima, in the area that is known as Norte Chico. It belonged to Norte Chico Civilization. Caral is the most ancient city of the Americas, one of the oldest civilization in the world.

The pyramids of Caral are contemporary with Egyptian Pyramids (3200 BC), 4000 years before Incas! A candidate for the oldest city in the world!

Even if it is hard to believe, it is older than the Gizeh pyramids in Egypt. Similar structures were found along the Pativilca and Fortaleza River, some of them even older than Caral Ruins itself. One of the oldest city on earth.

Caral was opened for tourism in July 2006. Discovery of Caral showed that Americas had a booming civilization at the same time Mesopotamia was flourishing on the other side of the World. It was almost like rewriting the history at the time!

CARAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX TOUR ITINERARY:

We will pick you up at your hotel/apartment early in the morning and we will take a Panamerican Highway to the north of Lima. It will take us from 3-4 hours to reach the site, depending on the road conditions. You will have an excellent opportunity to observe the lush fields of onion and corn, all over Supe River Valley. Sometimes we will have to stop because of sheep and goats.

There are 32 architectural sites with different sizes and functions in the Archaeological Complex of Caral. We will tour this magnificent complex with six buildings and a pyramid guided by professional on-site guide. We will have a chance to observe a series of medium and small buildings: temples, public squares, amphitheater, different shrines, streets and residential areas - many of them still partially covered with rubbles, sand and stones.

After this magnificent tour we will stop for a lunch in the city of Huacho, on our way back to Lima.

The 163-acre city was the administrative center for a complex civilization.

Caral was discovered by Paul Kosok (Chupacigarro Grande) in 1948, but it received little attention until recent days.

Peruvian archaeologist Ruth Shady was a leader of the team that explored Caral Ruins in 1995, and she is the Director of Caral-Supe Archaeological Project today.

No trace of warfare has been found at Caral; no battlements, no weapons, no mutilated bodies, no city walls.

It was a peaceful and gentle society, built on commerce and pleasure.

The town had a population of approximately 3000 people.
