What you should know about the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
After being closed in February, from March 1 tourists may enter this ancient path.
The historic Inca Trail, which leads to the citadel of Machu Picchu in Cusco, has been reopened to the public this month, after being closed due to maintenance work. Here are some recommendations if you are interested in walking through the arteries that comprise it.
1. There are seven paths that end at the same point prior to the famous citadel. The time it takes to travel this varies from one day to four. Avoid leaving the established routes to find shortcuts. The area is rugged.
2. Two of the paths used are those that take 2 to 4 days. To follow the first one you need to get off railway line from Cusco to Machu Picchu on the kilometer 104, visiting the archaeological complex of Chachabamba in Urubamba. The second begins at km 82 of the same railway line.
Both roads meet at Wiñayhuayna, track located just before the citadel. To find other routes and retail prices, you can contact the travel agency of your choice. You can also find such companies in the Association of Travel Agencies in Cusco.
3. On the website of the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) of Cusco is a link that displays a document with the names and passport numbers of authorized guides of the Association of Official Travel Guide of Cusco, the College of Licensed Cusco Tourism, Professional Tourist Guides Associates Cusco and free lance guides. There are more than 1,250.
4. March is still a month of rain. Wear lightweight but do not forget a raincoat. It would be appropriate to have on hand insect repellent and sunscreen.
5. If someone suggests you do some of the horseback ride, do not accept. It is forbidden to use these animals in the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
6. The National Service for Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp) under the Ministry of Environment, calls for national and foreign tourists to do the Inca Trail without picking up or taking samples of flora or fauna species along the way, especially at this time. Their concern focuses on orchids growing wild in the place.
7. These are some phone numbers that can be useful if you decide to embark on the adventure (always with the code of Cusco, 084). Dircetur: 223701; Tourist Police: 249654; Association of Travel Agencies in Cusco: 222580 and 227492, the Department of Culture of Cusco Region: 236061.
