La Punta Tour
LA PUNTA CALLAO TOUR DESCRIPTION:
La Punta is mostly an upper middle class district, where Callao's most prestigious families have historically lived. Many of the district's old houses are still conserved, with various boulder beaches, and a picturesque seafront, almost entirely surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.
ITINERARY:
First we will visit the submarine Abtao. BAP Abtao is a Sierra-type submarine which was launched as Tiburon (Shark). It was built in USA in 1953 at the Electric Boat in Grotton, Connecticut. In 1957 her name was changed to Abtao in memory of the naval battle of 7 February 1866 that was fought between the Spanish and Purvian/Chilean naval squadrons.
BAP Abtao served 48 years in Peruvian navy, completed 5,003 dives. Her motto was "Silence and assistance" in both times of peace and war. During 1988 she assisted in the rescue of the crew of BAP Pacocha after her collision with a fishing vessel and sinking. Abtao was decommissioned in 1998 and became a museum in 2004. At that time it was the only floating museum of Latin America.
During our visit we will participate in a simulated immersion through a multimedia program, and get engaged in a simulated combat situation. It will take us 45 minutes to complete the whole submarine tour.
Real Felipe Fortress is undoubtedly the most prominent landmark in Callao. It was constructed during colonial times (1747-1774), and it is the biggest example of military architecture built in America by Spain. The stone were shipped from the Island of San Lorenzo. It was built to defend the port of Callao and the city of Lima from pirates and corsairs during colonial times, because they knew very well that gold was shipped from there to Spain. At present time Real Felipe Fortress houses the Peruvian Army Museum.
The Fortress played an important part in peruvian history, like in the 1820s, where the Spanish royalists made their final stand with Peru. After famous battles of independence they were forced to withdraw, and leave for Spain, it was their last attempts to threaten the independence of Peru. There are many interesting places and highlights within the fortress itself: Military Museum, tall towers, along with rather surprisingly assault course and football pitch.
Finally, we will continue our tour through La Punta, a traditional district which forms part of Callao and once was the home of Lima's aristocracy. We will be able to see stately homes dating back to the early days of the Republic (early nineteenth century), as well as some other beautiful houses and mansions from the 1930s-50s. We will have a chance to enjoy it's picturesque seafront, almost entirely surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.

Our tour duration is 5 hours (approximately), probably a bit more than that, depending of the traffic.
