Pachacamac Ruins - The Rome of the Andes
PACHACAMAC RUINS TOUR DESCRIPTION:
Pachacamac Ruins are located just 31 km (19,25 mi) to the south of peruvian capital Lima, in the valley of Lurin River. Visit to Pachacamac is one of best things to do in Lima.
Ruins of Pachacamac still conserve the mysticism and religiosity of their past.
The worshipped image of Peruvian god Pachacamac has been conserved until now.
Pachacamac was main pre Inca and pre Columbian adoration and ceremonial center of the inhabitants of the valley of Rimac in which the god Pachacamc was venerated. That was long before Spanish conquerors arrived, and long before the Incas, as early as 200 AD. The Huari Empire (Wari) is the most known of them, a very important Peruvian pre Columbian civilization. There are many excellent pieces of Peruvian pottery and textile in museum.
Peruvian god Pachacamac was considered the God 'creator of life and universe'.
Spanish accounts indicate Pachacamac was one of the holiest shrines in the central Andes, in the time of Incas and the Inca Empire, and is one of most important Peruvian Ruins.
The Pachacamac deity survived the Inca Empire and Spanish Conquests. With the arrival of Christianity, it was later bound up with the Christ of Pachacamilla, the painting known as the Lord of Miracles - blending pagan customs into Catholic tradition.
The Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro heard about Pachacamac from Inca King Atahualpa, while holding him as prisoner in Cajamarca in 1532.
An expedition was sent immediately to sack the Incas center, seizing a large amount of silver and gold from the site. The Conquistadores burned the site afterwards.
Even today many people feel astonished when walking by the halls of Acllahuasi - sometimes called Mamacona (house prepared for the chosen Inca girls), Temple of the pyramids and the Temple of the Sun (Templo de Sol). Pachacamac Tour is a must in your Lima Travel Plan, definitely one of the best Peru Tours near Peruvian capital.
The site of Pachacamac has been well preserved, and one of the Inca Empire structures, the Mamacona, has been reconstructed. There is an impressive Temple of the Sun (Templo del Sol), one of the most important Inca Ruins on Peruvian Coast - "The Rome of the Andes".
Pachacamac is well worth of paying a visit, probably one of best Peru tours you can take from Lima, together with Lima City Tour. It is just 45 minute drive from Miraflores.
There is an on-site museum, rather small but very interesting, housing important collection of artifacts found in Pachacamac Complex - pottery, textile, tools, jewelry, ornaments, funerary masks from Wari Culture, a very important pre Inca civilization (before the Incas).
The archaeological complex of Pachacamac overlooks the San Pedro beach and the town of Lurin, famous for shrimp dishes and 'chicharrones', fried pork with 'mote' corn - a very popular Peruvian dish. Chicharron and cebiche are among most typical Peruvian Food.
You can have your lunch there, it is located just few kilometers down the old Pan-American Highway. Peruvian Cuisine is getting very popular internationally these days.
